Faced with the growing Russian threat and fears that the United States may no longer wish to act as the continent’s protector, European leaders are accelerating efforts to build an independent defence capacity despite the gridlock affecting existing projects – from the anti-drone shield on Europe’s eastern flank to a next-generation fighter jet led by France, Germany and Spain.
