Mario Draghi warns of EU economic and security risks

Italy concerned over renewed Gaza conflict, says Crosetto 

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto voiced serious concern over the fighting in Gaza, attributing the escalation to tensions over hostage negotiations. He warned that the breakdown of the truce complicates efforts to secure the hostages’ return and expressed doubts about the chances of restoring peace, though Italy remains committed to diplomatic efforts.

The Democratic Party agrees on EU rearmament

The resolution is to be presented in the Senate and Chamber following Prime Minister Meloni’s communications. The Democratic Party is agreeing to a unified plan on Ukraine and EU rearmament. The different factions of the party have reached a compromise formula during internal meetings that satisfies both the party majority and the reformist wing. 

Newborn smuggled in a shopping bag: four arrests 

A baby was illegally transported from Morocco to be sold. Turin police arrested four people involved in the trafficking scheme. Born in August 2024, he was smuggled by ferry from Tangier in October, being held in a shopping bag, and temporarily housed by a Moroccan family in Turin before being sold. The suspects face charges of human trafficking and facilitating illegal immigration.

Fire in Sestri Ponente: 29-Year-Old dies, four injured

A man lost his life in a fire that broke out in his apartment in a neighborhood in Genoa. The blaze, which started at night in Sestri Ponente, left four others injured due to smoke inhalation. Firefighters managed to evacuate the building and contain the flames. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Earthquake in south Italy 

Many residents felt the tremor and some went into the streets. A 4.2 magnitude earthquake broke out in Potenza and Matera around 10 a.m. In Potenza, students were evacuated from their schools. According to data from the INGV, the Italian institute for earthquakes, the epicenter was six kilometers from the town of Vaglio Basilicata (Potenza), at a depth of 14.3 kilometers.

Inmate kills himself in Verona’s jail 

“Second suicide in less than 48 hours” said the Gennarino De Fazio, General Secretary of the Uilpa, the Union of the Public Penitentiary Police. In 2025, Italy has seen 19 prisoner suicides. In Verona the authorities report an urgent action is needed to reduce prison density, increase police staff, improve mental health services, and implement systemic reforms to prevent further deaths. 

Drugs hidden among the graves

A 30-year-old cemetery caretaker in Desenzano del Garda, Brescia, was arrested for drug dealing. Police investigations revealed he hid drugs among the graves. Searches of his home and cemetery storage uncovered cash and 26 doses of drugs ready for sale.

Abusive landfill: an area of over 1,000 square meters

The police discovered an illegal waste dump in the Trafinello area close to Crotone, in Calabria region. The area of over 1,000 square meters was discovered by the military who, under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, have been conducting territorial checks for several weeks against environmental crimes. 

Miami Open: Sinner and Musetti await opponents 

The 2025 tennis tournament (March 19-30) will feature eight Italian contenders, with the 11th seed Sinner set to face either a qualifier or Arthur Fils in the second round. Similarly, the 16th seed Musetti awaits the winner between Aleksandar Vukic and David Goffin.
