Manifestation to remember innocent victims in Sicily

Zeta Italy News President Mattarella said: “Mafia can be defeated,” and Prime minister Meloni commented: “The mafias are an avowed enemy of our democracy.” On the occasion of the thirtieth Day of remembrance and commitment to the innocent victims of the mafia, thousands of people marched in Trapani, Sicily. The manifestation saw the participation of over 500 family members of people killed by the criminal organization. 

Two Italian skiers died in Sweden

The victims, aged 45 and 50, were part of a group of five people led by a certified international mountain guide. They were on a heli-skiing excursion in northern Sweden. The remaining three skiers are believed to have escaped unharmed. 

A second corpse found in the Sardinian sea

The discovery was made in the waters off a promontory in Cagliari, Sardegna. In the same spot, on January 19, the corpse of 29-year-old Manola Mascia was found. Investigations are underway to determine if it’s her boyfriend Paolo Durzu, 33, who has been missing since January 19. The body was sighted this morning, but rough sea conditions have made recovery by water impossible. Firefighters will retrieve it by land.

Two dead in residential blaze in Tuscany

The fire started in a bedroom on the second floor. A man and a woman died in a fire at an apartment in an eight-story building in Pistoia, a city in the Tuscany region. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames after arriving. A family of three was evacuated as a precaution. Emergency services, local police, and the mayor were on site. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

National strike of public transportation

The unions are calling for higher wages, less physically demanding working conditions, and improved safety for employees and passengers. The 24-hour local public transportation strike is taking place nationwide, with varying levels of disruption. In Milan and Rome, metros are open. In Bologna, the strike has led to significant disruptions, including heavy traffic congestion and difficulties in finding available taxis.

Flights cancelled from Italy to the United Kingdom

Five British Airways departures between the airport of Rome, Fiumicino and London Heathrow were cancelled today due to a power outage at Heathrow caused by a fire in an electrical unit. Passengers on the first two flights, already boarded, were taken off with their luggage and returned to the terminal. Airport operator advised travelers to check flight status due to possible delays or cancellations.

Six arrests in Rome for drug-related offenses 

Six people were arrested in Rome during drug-related checks by Carabinieri. Three foreign nationals, aged 34 to 45, were arrested near Colosseum for drug possession with intent to sell. In other districts, an Egyptian man was arrested for drug dealing. A Gambian man was caught with a large quantity of drugs, including hashish, marijuana, heroin, and crack, along with cash. Finally, a 32-year-old Italian man was arrested after being found with cocaine and cash.

FIGC’s campaign against ethnic bias

On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) reaffirmed its commitment against all forms of prejudice with the initiative Three primary colors, infinite shades. Launched during the Italy-Germany match at San Siro, it calls on the football community to promote inclusion. 

Book Pride Milan kicks off 

The independent publishing fair, now part of the Turin Book Fair, will continue until March 23. This year’s theme, Dancing on the Edge of the World, celebrates dance as a metaphor for balance and renewal. There are special sections: Book Comics, Book Young and YA, and Book Sport. Numerous Italian and international guests are expected to attend the event at the Superstudio Maxi in Milan. 

Nature-inspired creature is exhibited in Trento

Artist Marco Martalar has unveiled the Radicosauro, a fantasy being made from lake roots and wood, in Predaia, in the province of Trento. Symbolizing harmony with nature, it’s his eighth sculpture and was created with full artistic freedom. The project, part of park revitalization efforts, was funded by the local municipality.
