New York Times: U.S. and China make trade deal 

Trade negotiators from both countries said Oct. 26 that they have reached a deal on U.S. tariffs ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week. The discussion included talks on bilateral trade, export controls, reciprocal tariff extensions and cooperation in cracking down on fentanyl. In other news, French officials announced Oct. 26 that suspects were arrested late at night on Oct. 25 in connection with the Louvre jewel heist on Oct. 19. 

Financial Times: China delays export control of rare earth materials in trade deal

China agreed not to implement export reductions on rare earth materials to the U.S. as part of a preliminary trade deal between the two countries. The deal reached in Malaysia was in response to Trump’s tariffs on the country. Another top story is about businesses seeing an increase in employee scams involving AI-generated expense reports. 

The Guardian: Jewish New Yorkers on NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani

While Jews in NYC have conflicting views on Mamdani, the front runner in the mayoral election, a July poll showed 43% of Jewish New Yorkers said they would support Mamdani in the election. Among Jewish youth under 44, support for him reached 67%. Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, marking a shift in the Jewish community’s alliance toward Israel. 

Le Monde: Sébastien Lecornu compromises on France’s budget

In an unusual move, Lecornu has been present on France’s budget hearings that began on Oct. 2. He’s calling on parliament members to “change the culture” and “develop compromises.” In addition, Syria is troubled by jihadists groups who have clashed with security forces.  

Süddeutsche Zeitung: Donald Trump pressures Hamas to return hostage bodies

The U.S. president and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio are increasing scrutiny on Hamas as the search continues for the remaining hostage bodies in Gaza. Hamas will be forced to disarm after the hostage swap is over, but the question of who will take their weapons and who will take power in Gaza is still undecided. The German paper also reported on the arrests of suspects on Oct. 26 related to the jewelry heist at the Louvre in Paris on Oct.19.
