Prosecutors Seek House Arrest for Ex-Sicily Governor in Health Tender Probe

1️⃣ Palermo prosecutors request house arrest for Salvatore “Totò” Cuffaro

The District Directorate for Anti-Mafia Investigations in Palermo asked a judge to place Salvatore Cuffaro, former Sicilian governor, and Saverio Romano, Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic, under house arrest as part of an investigation into allegedly rigged tenders in the regional health sector involving 18 people. For magistrates, the network would have steered public contracts through a system of favours and political mediation, reopening one of Sicily’s most sensitive political dossiers.

2️⃣ Worker dies after medieval tower collapses in central Rome

A 13th-century structure near the Forum area, close to the Colosseum, partially collapsed during restoration works, trapping four workers; one, a Romanian national, died after being pulled out following hours of rescue efforts. The site had benefited from EU recovery-fund money, so the accident is already prompting calls for tighter controls on restoration projects in Rome’s historic centre.

In Collegno (near Turin), the boyfriend of the victim’s former partner has admitted to fatally stabbing 39-year-old entrepreneur Marco Veronese outside his parents’ home, after months of disputes over the custody of the children they shared. Investigators say the suspect, class of 1976, was traced through CCTV and mobile phone data and said the attack wasn’t pre-planned but sparked by the custody conflict.
