The New York Times: Zohran Mamdani is elected Mayor of New York City

Mr. Mamdani, formally a state lawmaker, has become the 111th mayor of New York, becoming the first Muslim to take the roll. A democratic socialist, his victory represents a major win for progressiveness in the United States. Meanwhile, the front page also reports on the death of former vice President of the United States, Dick Chaney. The controversial figure, widely known as the most powerful vice President in US history, died of cardiac and vascular disease at the age of 84.

Financial Times: Rachel Reeves paves the way for oncome tax hikes in latest budget

Chancellor of the Exchequer Reeves has hinted at raised income tax rates, in breach from manifesto. She also hinted at increases in taxes for businesses with the scope of tackling Britian’s national dept. Furthermore, financial literacy classes are set to become a mandatory part of the secondary school curriculum from September 2028 according to the Department of Education.

The Irish Times: Projected heat increases because of climate change will make much of the world unliveable

According to the UN environmental programme the world is heading for a serious escalation of climate risk and damages. This follows on from a meeting of EU Environmental minsters we’re locking in a long meeting last night discussing the plan to reduce green-house gas emission by 2040. Continued support for Hong Kong as an international financial centre has been promised by Vice-Premier He Lifeng. Chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu has promised stability for global investors and wishes to bolster Hong Kong’s global standing. Furthermore, Hong Kong has been ranked as fourth in the world for digital competitiveness, driven by a strong performance in talent and education.
