The Italian Association of Livestock Farmers (AIA) brought farm animals from throughout the country to receive a blessing at St. Peter’s Square on the feast day of St. Anthony the Abbot on January 17. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti blessed the animals followed by a procession led by the Carabinieri.
Organizers promoted Italian agriculture hoping to attract youth back to farming amid scarce urban job opportunities, as well as giving city dwellers a taste of the Italian countryside. AIA member Morgante Dorinda talked about the importance of Italian agriculture, and attendee Marco Rocella brought his dog to receive the cardinal’s blessing.
