Would you break your legs in order to become taller? Would you hit your face with a hammer to sculpt more “virile” cheekbones? Welcome to the world of looksmaxxing, the new obsession sweeping across a generation of young American men: a cult of extreme beauty in which the body becomes something to fix piece by piece, at any cost, through surgery, steroids, self-harm, and brutal ideologies.

Looksmaxxing — also evoked by the Disney+ series The Beauty — is turning into a collective obsession intertwined with the American radical right, the Trumpian universe, and a nihilistic, Darwinian vision of society, where those considered “beautiful” dominate and those who are not are relegated to subhuman discard.

Artificial intelligence, too, is rewriting our standards: perfect faces, virtual influencers, unreal bodies that become the norm. And the more we look at them, the more inadequate we feel. Transhumanism promises an enhanced man, a technological superman. But if algorithms are the ones deciding what is “perfect,” whose will is it, really?
