Sergio Mattarella: the 2024 end-of-year message amid Italy’s lights and shadows

The Italian President emphasized peace, respect, and the importance of overcoming difficulties with unity

At 8:30 PM, President Sergio Mattarella delivered his 2024 final speech on nationwide television. It was his tenth end-of-the-year address to the public, lasting over 15 minutes. Several key topics were discussed, including peace in light of the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. “Peace does not mean submitting to the tyranny of those who attack other countries with weapons, but rather the peace of every people’s right to freedom and dignity,” said the president.

Press freedom and war

An important mention was made of Cecilia Sala, detained in Iran. According to Sergio Mattarella, what happened underscores the importance of free information. Many journalists in recent years have risked their lives to report on wars around the world, with many losing their lives in the process. A significant symbol of the world today is the growing expenditure on arms, which has reached a staggering $2.433 trillion—eight times more than the amount allocated at COP29 in Baku.

Youth and respect

His speech addressed the youth, who were described as “the great resource of our country.” However, it is essential to “listen to their discomfort and address the precariousness and uncertainty they feel with seriousness.” At the core of the speech was the concept of respect. The word was chosen by the Italian Encyclopedia Treccani as the word of the year. The president emphasized respect for others as the first step toward a more welcoming, reassuring, and humane society.

He recalled the murder of Giulia Cecchettin. Many girls share a similar fate, killed by men who “do not respect the freedom and dignity of women.” In reality, these men “do not respect themselves.” Women should not only be seen as victims. “We want and must talk about their energy, their work,” Mattarella emphasized.

Patriotism and hope

The president called the nation’s attention to what, for him, is patriotism. The work of doctors on the front lines, of teachers dedicated to educating young people, and those involved in volunteer work. Patriotism, according to the president, is also found in those who integrate into our country and embrace its constitutional values and laws. Therefore, it is crucial to create paths for integration and mutual understanding.

In 2025, Italy will also celebrate the 80th anniversary of Liberation. This anniversary “brings the call to be liberated from everything that hinders freedom, democracy, and justice.” These values are expressed through citizens’ broad participation in voting. Despite the difficult times Italy is facing, President Sergio Mattarella reminded the nation that hope should not be merely passive waiting, but should reflect in our freedoms and our choices.
