White smoke, open arms: the election of Pope Leo XIV

On a day filled with symbols and anticipation, the Catholic Church chose its new Pontiff

The afternoon in St.Peter’s Square had stretched on under a sky heavy with anticipation. Pilgrims, journalists, and curious spectators had been gathered since the early morning, braving the wait with songs and quiet expectation. Then, a shine of excitement, but it was just the lone seagull perched beside the Sistine Chapel’s chimney, just like yesterday. Some took it as a sign, others laughed.

Moments later, the signal everyone had been waiting for appeared. First faint, then clearly white, the smoke rose above the chapel roof. The response was immediate: cheers, flags, chants. For the fourth time in the history of televised conclaves, the world had witnessed the moment a new pope was chosen.

From that point on the question shifted: “who?” People still favored Cardinal Pietro Parolin, some thought of Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi too. Screens lit up with live coverage, people speculated, but the Vatican remained silent. Then came the official announcement. Cardinal Dominique Mamberti stepped onto the balcony and delivered the official Latin formula: “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam.” The name that followed caught many by surprise.

“Robert Francis, Cardinal Prevost… who has taken the name Leo the Fourteenth.” A name that almost nobody saw coming. For the first time in history, the See of Peter would be held by a man born in the United States. Shortly after, Pope Leo XIV appeared. Dressed in the official garments, visibly moved, he raised his arms in a long, silent gesture before addressing the square. “Peace be with all of you”. A peace, he said, that must be “unarmed, disarming, humble, and persevering.”

In an unusual move for a first appearance, he read from prepared remarks. His words, calm and deliberate, paid homage to his predecessor:”We still remember the soft but brave voice of Pope Francis blessing this city. “Then, lifting his gaze:”Let me continue that same blessing: God is with us. God loves every one of you. And evil with not prevail.”

He concluded with a message to the Church of Rome and beyond:”Let us become a missionary Church, one that builds bridges, fosters dialogue, and keep its arms open. As these square welcomes all, so must we. All who need compassion, presence and love.”

By nightfall, the news had spread across the globe. A new pope, a new name, a new voice.
